Flat Plan

This is the front cover of the Billboard magazine that inspired me:

This is the flat plan for the music magazine I am doing:
The masthead it is not yet decided therefore I haven't included it

The Billboard magazine that inspired me has a similar shot as the one I did and it is very similar as they both have the same genre ( R&B/Hip-Hop/Rap) .
I choose to follow closely the layout and the way the subject is presented.

Furthermore, I will include a bar code and the price on the front cover as the Billboard magazine cover is an online version, mine will be a physical version.
The pose represents the genre that I'm interested in as the body posture suggests that the subject has a carefree attitude and the fact that his hands are in the pockets of the jacket highlights this.
The angle of gaze is made to give the viewer the feeling that the artist on the cover looks at them ( almost as they would have eye contact).
The outfit of the subject links very well with the stereotypical stile of Rap / Hip Hop male artists.

Shot List

Those are the key images I am planning to take:

Target Audience/ Reader profile/ Fahion

Target Audience:

My target audience age range is between 15-18 maybe 20 years old. Mainly aimed at male but also female, about 60%male and 40% female. Through the articles and Images on my front cover I will give the audience hints on the target audience.
Considering that in this industry most of the artists are male I will try to make my magazine more appealing to male as they are more dominant.
For example: Kendrick Lamar, 50Cent, Lil Pump..etc.

Reader Profile:

This is Daniela

Currently, she's studying biology, physics, chemistry and maths. She is 17 years old and she's in college now. Daniela has found that by studying these subjects, they have really helped her to get a more in-depth insight into her future career which is to become a forensic detective.
Daniela enjoys R&B / Rap / Hip-hop/ Grime music since she was little.
Alongside those, she enjoys listening to hip-hop artists such as Eminem who inspired her to study such subjects as she believes in facts and real things that are proven like his music as he came from the ghetto of America and now he has officially been labelled the "Rap God".

Fashion:

The target audience that I am aiming to attract has a young, trendy style including things like hoodies, jeans, accessories that will stand out as well as wearing known brands and many more...

Survey

I have done a survey using SurveyMonkey to identify gaps in the market and see which is my target audience. From the survey, I could see that people are interested in R&B / Hip-Hop/ Rap genre and once in a while would buy a magazine for £3. (once in a while was the answer that had the biggest percentage because now we can find everything online and information that we might find in a magazine could be accessible for free online.)
The main thing that attracts the audience is the cover and the picture on it, most of them said a medium shot would please their expectations.

Here are the results:

Mood board

This is a mood board based on what personally attracted my attention. I have decided to base my magazine on R&B / Hip-Hop/Rap music so I researched magazines based on this area. From this, I gathered ideas about features that I will include in a music magazine. I placed them there as I like the style and layout of the front cover and I think this will give me the inspiration to produce something on that level.

Brief

To start with I would like to have a Music magazine that will appeal to my target audience which is 15-18 year old both female and male, who are interested in R&B, Hip-Hop, Rap, this is because the this is the type of music that I listen the most. I choose this genre because I have more knowledge in this area and I feel like a lot of people who are my age group listen to this kind of music and it's very popular.
Furthermore, my magazine name is not decided yet, but I have a few, such as:
ClicK, Maniac, H.P, Alarm,Grand, Hip Pot.
Next, I will do a focus group with different people to see if this genre is as popular as I would like to believe. Also, I will do a survey to identify the gaps in the market and by doing my focus group research I will be able to understand what visuals people would like to see and what is appealing in their eyes.
In addition, I will have a few shots, mainly close-ups because I feel as if this would be the best type of shots in relation to my music genre and magazine. I may experiment with different types of shots and will execute my ideas on a shot list but use close-ups are what I would personally opt for.

I'm excited about this because it's to do with something that is relevant to today's society and is something that I am personally highly interested in and I hope it goes well. However, I feel a little sceptic about my abilities to use Photoshop but I'm willing to learn and experiment by getting help from my teachers and peers.

Representation

In fewer words, the meaning of this in media is presenting people in a way that suits them best to make money.

How might the media categorize people?
 -age
-gender
-ethnicity
-sexuality
-regional and national identity

Media Representations are the ways in which the media portrays particular groups, communities, experiences, ideas, or topics from a particular ideological or value perspective.

The spectrum of representations is broad depending on what the media company wants to portray.

Intertextuality
The process of creating references to any kind of media text via another media text.
example:

Context

Social Context - The environment of people that surrounds something's creation or intended audience. Reflects how the people around something use and interpret. (can influence how something is viewed)

Cultural Context - (similar to social context) is the way that media producers communicate with the people living in society.
Culture: the shared experience of people that live in a society.

Politica Context - Reflects the environment in which something is produced indicating its purpose or motive. (often political messages are made to persuade people)

EXAMPLE:
<<<British Society>>>

SOCIETY-CULTURE-POLITICS

Society:    Men and Women ...
Well, here it's more about stereotypes, men are seen to be dominant, providers perhaps adulterers and well known for the drinking culture(but not just men drink)

Women are well know for being innocent and vulnerable(victim) and let's not forget that they are used as a sexual object...

Teens are seen as obsessed with technology or anti-social or rebellious and the list could go on...

Culture:
No matter how busy British people are they still have some spare time in which they...
-drink
-smoke
-watch tv
-sleep
-going to pubs
-over socialising (over a tea or beer)
-shopping
etc.
and...

 Politics:  Democratic Country(house of representatives)
The main problem now... BREXIT. >> check this link >>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHpbu9mqFJs

Colour Theory

(body of practical guidance to colour mixing and the visual effects of specific colour combinations)

The colour theory is important because colours influence the meaning of the words/representations that are used in media texts.

VOYEURISM

Linked to the "Male Gaze"

Check this out!

MALE GAZE...
there is a theory about this, having the same name. (predictable)
Laura Mulvey wrote a very influential essay "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" (1975)
suggesting that the way women are viewed in cinema is "UNEQUAL".
The camera necessarily presents women as "sexualised" for the pleasure of men.

-women are presented as sexual spectacle and objects of pleasure...
-men fetishise women imbuilding them with an overvalued and unrealistic status..

And I agree (considering that she said this in 1975...)
Laura Mulvey

Image result for the female gaze
Let's don't forget that now we can talk about FEMALE GAZE

Very similar to the male gaze...
but instead of females being sexualised we have men. ( with the purpose to please the female eye)

A good example would be the Movie " Magic Mike "  we can see how men are presented and understand that the viewer's Gaze could vary an be applied to both men and women.

Camera treatment

HOW DOES THE TREATMENT OF THE CAMERA CREATE MEANING IN REAL
MEDIA TEXT?

Looking at this I could say that it is pretty basic... But the way a photo or a video is taken(angles/camera treatment etc.) can change what the target audience is thinking about and it can influence what the media text is, and what the viewer sees after editing.

This is my first Magazine deconstruction.
~Main Conventions of a Magazine~

In my deconstruction, you can see different conventions...
For instance, I choose to talk about the Masthead(title/brand name of the magazine) and Bleeding (when the image covers the text or vice versa), Strapline(coverline which spons the width of the front cover), Coverlines/features (list of contents in the magazine), Font type(serifs are semistructured details or small decorative flourishes), Image(photograph in this case a photo of Rihanna).
