Music Video - Coldplay 'the scientist'

This music video is inspiring-->  The artist has had to learn the lyrics not just off by heart but also backward. This is complicating and can take weeks to learn. The narrative of this music video fits in well with the lyrics because it is all shown in reverse 'oh, let's go back to the start'.

So as we can see at the beginning of the music video is the lead singer, what appears to be, lying down singing towards the camera. This print screenshot is an extreme close up of his face. After this, there is a slow zooming out to reveal that in fact he is positioned on a mattress (shown in next print screenshot)

The print screenshot just to demonstrate the lead singer positioned on a mattress still singing towards the camera. This type of camera shot is a mid-length shot.

Furthermore, mise-en-scene is a factor in this video to make the video more favorable. The setting, in the beginning, is a town with low tone graffiti on the floor next to Chris Martin when lying on a bright blue mattress. This connotes quite a mundane setting which provides a relationship with provides a relationship between the music and the visuals as the beat is slow paced.

There is low key lighting present with a grey film stock, which creates a dull, hopeless atmosphere making the video more touching as apposed to a brightly lit atmosphere like upbeat cheerful songs. Another concept is costume. Chris Martin is dressed in typical mundane clothing with a white t-shirt and black trousers. This is an intertextual reference for Coldplay as they are regularly shown in plain clothes, reiterating their dull atmosphere that they create, but which makes them unique and catchy.
